Xiong Liang, a famous essayist and artist, was born in Zhejiang Province in 1975. He started to learn the traditional Chinese painting at an early age. Drawing inspiration from the essence of the Chinese traditional art, his illustrations focus on the variation of lines and shade which make his characters unique and the sceneries poetic. Therefore his drawings are noted for their highly expressive power of emotions. In 2004, his illustrations forThe Complete Works of Hans Christian Andersen Fairy Tale were housed in Danish National Library as a precious souvenir of celebrating Andersen’s 200thanniversary.

Lotus Back is a simple story talking about how a waterside village develops into a prosperous city. What moves people most is the fairytale ending which makes readers wonder a lot. Just as Xiong Liang ever said,“ A city has its own memories. To develop a city is not to destroy the old memories but to perfect them." Our hometown used to be beautiful and we should make her more attractive.”

Lotus Back won the title of “The Most Beautiful Book in China” in 2008. It is the first original picture book ever winning such an award. In 2009, together with other 19 books,Lotus Back ran for the award of “The Most Beautiful Book in the World” on behalf of China in Leipzig, Germany.

Lotus Back is a simple story talking about how a waterside village develops into a prosperous city. What moves people most is the fairytale ending which makes readers wonder a lot. Just as Xiong Liang ever said,“ A city has its own memories. To develop a city is not to destroy the old memories but to perfect them." Our hometown used to be beautiful and we should make her more attractive.” Xiong Liang, the story teller, is a man who was born and grows up in a waterside village Jiaxing.

What is worth mentioning is that Ma Yu, the young painter, finished his illustrations on the board. The illustrations are very impressive and vivid and full of fun and energy. It is said that this book was published long after its completion. Careful readers may find some cracks in the wood, but they do not flaw the story. On the contrary, they make the story symbolic.

Story:

We used to live happily with lotus floating on the lake. But one day, some strangers came by helicopter for terrain investigation. Not long after, boats loaded with mud and sand came and there was no more tranquility.

A booming city rose in the lake district. More and more high buildings emerged while less and less lotus survived. In wet seasons, we wandered among the buildings, missing the lotus more.

At last the year came when it rained heavily for weeks. The city was almost drowned. The lighthouse keeper found that a lot of lotus was pouring into the city. The adults tried every means to keep them out, while the children opened the gate of the dam……

Finally the lotus came back. What a familiar picture! Everyone quieted down.

Now we live with lotus every day, just like before.

The Author’s Words:

We should make our hometown more wonderful .”——Xiong Lei, 11, 2008

In my childhood, Xiong Liang and I studied in Nanhu Primary School which was near the South Lake. And I was in a higher grade. In our school there were a group of children from the Xu’s village which was located in the center of the South Lake. They had lots of interesting stories which I’ve never heard of before. Sitting in the wooden buckets, they picked water chestnuts and lotus roots in the lake. They could swim very well, and they were naughtier and braver than us. Boys of Xu’s village had suntanned skin and inexhaustible strength. Some risky games such as catching snakes and underwater diving all seemed simple to them.

Xiong Liang used to play with the boys of Xu’s village. One day, one of his snakes escaped and he was so frightened that he rummaged throughout the house. Finally he got it.

We always had fun playing with the boys of Xu‘s village. They were our idols.

Later, the village was moved away because of city construction. Most of villagers were fishermen. I did not know how they could earn a living without waters. However, their fate was not in their own hands. They were, somehow, controllrd by the officials and the experts.

I came back home years later and happened to meet my monitor, the most excellent girl of Xu’s village. She stood behind a counter in a magnificent department store, her eyes not as shining as before. Fish without water.

Jiaxing is a humid city, where dim watermarks can be traced on its old walls. Walking on the streets, you can even smell the fragrance of lotus as if they are blooming around you.

Xiong Liang and I have never talked about Xu’s village. There are many things we don’t talk about. He may be thinking about another story when he wrote this one.

Xu’s village has disappeared. It is one of the sacrifices on the way to modernization.

Such a story was made to remind people of the fact that there are still many other beautiful villages in China. It would be better if such villages would be rebulit in a more humanistic way, considering their environments

Every city has its stories.Instead of destroying its precious memories, the urbanization should play an important role in strengthening the culture of the city.

Our hometown used to be beautiful. We should change it to better.
